Studio 1

Let's start our studio tour by showing you what Studio 1 looks like:

Studio 1 Photo 1 Studio 1 Photo 2

To the right and extending slightly behind the presenter are the two turntables. To the front right of the mixing desk are the dual CD player and the two Minidisc players. The DAT is under the turntables. Sat on top of the mixing desk is the keyboard and monitor for the "Myriad" computer-based playout system. Behind the presenter there is the facility to plug in a cassette deck and an extra minidisc recorder, while in front of the presenter is the patient request telephone. The little box on the left of the mixer is the intercom control.

On the left is a general view of studio 1, while on the right are presenters Peter Dodwell, Steve Ridout and seated Bryan Downham.

Studio indicator lamps

Both inside the studios and outside (above the door) we have indicator lamps to show what's going on. The Studio one has 7 bulbs: "Talk On" (on when Talk studio is "opted" to this studio), 2 x "Mic Live" (one for this studio, one for the Talk Studio"), "Doorbell", "Phone Ringing", "On Air" and "Fire".

Outside the studio doors are lamps for "On Air", "In Use", and "Mic Live".

They are made from low-height brass bayonett holders, using small "golf-ball" bulbs, and use a fluorescent light cover over them.

We built the two studios to be as near identical as we could make them. Each studio has the following equipment:

  • a 12-channel mixer (Frame Electronics)
  • a 4-channel, 12-input "ring main" source selector (gives us more audio sources)
  • P Squared "Myriad" playout computer
  • a double CD player (Denon DN-1800F)
  • 2 Turntables (Technics SL1200 MkII)
  • 2 MiniDisk Players, one capable of recording (Tascam MD-350)
  • 1 DAT Machine (Sony DTC-60ES)
  • 1 Teletext TV (Nokia 3724)
  • 2 sockets for any other "Auxilliary" equipment
  • 3 Microphones ( Studio Projects B3 for the main presenter and guest, plus a cheaper one!)
  • Access to telephone lines, OB lines, IRN and other feeds from Central Facilities
  • Access to and control over the Talk Studio
  • A cleanfeed of the other studio
  • An intercom system for inter-studio and studio-OB communications
  • Studio Selector Control Panel (to control which studio is on-air)
  • A set of "status lamps", indicating things like "mic-live", "on-air" and "doorbell"
  • A telephone (in addition to the ability to put telephone calls on air)
  • An MSF Radio Clock
